Industry based on traditional agriculture and forestry is still flourishing. The food industry uses raw material grown in a clean environment. The sawmill industry has always been one of the region’s largest employers.

Metalwork is also mastered in Northeast Finland, where a large machine shop manufactures propellers for ships plying the world’s oceans.
