In Northeast Finland, like everywhere else in the country, forestry is primarily based on family forestry. It is controlled by the 150-year-old principle of planting three or four saplings in place of each tree that is felled, in order to guarantee the growth of new forest. As an integral part of this activity, local forestry associations provide assistance in forest use. They take care of their members’ forests with expertise. One of the principles of sustainable forestry is that more trees are growing than are consumed.
