The water farming units of the Game and Fisheries Research Institute (RKTL) maintain native fish populations by means of farming, research and breeding. Two units operate in Northeast Finland, Ohtaoja in Taivalkoski and Käylä in Kuusamo.

The fish hatcheries of the Game and Fisheries Research Institute have been granted an international ISO-9001 certificate of quality. The certificate verifies the high quality of the hatcheries’ operation and proves that it takes the environment into consideration. The main product of the Taivalkoski unit is fertilized roe. It produces about 40 million fish eggs per year.
