Here watersheds separate the waters flowing into the White Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. The rivers flow into five different directions. The largest volumes of water flow down the Kemijoki River to the Gulf of Bothnia and east down the Oulankajoki River into Russia and from there to the White Sea.

Summer arrives in this Arctic Circle tableland within a couple of weeks. Hundreds of tiny brooks flow in the wilderness and add to the roar of the rapids in the large rivers.

Autumn and its colors are also something special. When northeastern Finland’s nature is bitten by the first frost, the autumn’s busiest tourism season begins. Thousands of tourists arrive to admire and enjoy the fall colors.
