TAIVALKOSKI – PARISH OF THOUSANDS OF TALES
Taivalkoski is known for its nature tourism. It is also the birthplace of the great Finnish novelist, Professor Kalle Päätalo, and home to the Jalava shop, the oldest local shop in Finland that is still preserved in its original form and location.
Thanks to the Iijoki river, Taivalkoski has always been a centre of the wood industry. The Ulea sawmill, part of Pölkky Oy, is still one of the largest employers in the municipality. Today, Taivalkoski also thrives on nature tourism and local culture, but, at the same time, it is evolving into an increasingly international, modern rural municipality with a growing ICT sector and other industries.
