POSIO – MAGICAL WONDERLAND OF LAPLAND
Posio offers a blend of age-old traditions and vibrant modern day life. The name of the municipality has its origins in the early history of the area: in the language of the original inhabitants, the Forest Sami, the word "Posio" refers to the ceremonial, mythical opening at the back of a Lappish tepee.
Upon arrival to Posio, visitors are met with the enchanting scenery of lakes and hills. The abundance of lakes, rivers, rapids and other forms of water has made Posio a popular leisure destination. With more than 2,500 holiday residences, Posio springs to life in the summer and winter seasons. See the Livohka holiday resort's picture gallery or have a look at what the winter season has to offer in the Honka Ski Village in Posio.
Posio is known for its ceramics production, which is an integral part of its image. The Pentik Centre factory shop, museums and exhibitions offer plenty of beautiful things to see and buy for those interested in ceramics and interior decoration.
Posio lives very much off the land. Primary production accounts for 24% of the local economy. Posio is a major milk-producing area in Lapland, with some 13,5 million litres of milk produced every year. Another important source of income in Posio is reindeer farming.
